No matter what hardware you decide to go with, on the software side, Square is our Editors’ Choice among services that offer credit card readers and point-of-sale solutions to your business. If you don’t think NFC is necessary, and don’t want to switch between two different devices, the Magstripe + Chip Card Reader might be the better pick. But if you want to handle the mobile payment and credit card options of the foreseeable future, spend a few more bucks and go with the Contactless + Chip Card Reader.
The Square Contactless and chip reader is a great product for those who run businesses and need something quick and easy to charge their clients with. The experience is super smooth and easy, works 100% of the time and takes up just about a few inches of space. I like the fact that it`s easy to use and visually appealing rather than those old credit card processing machines. I have enjoyed using this product and I will continue to do so until something better happens to be invented. The only gripe I have about this product is the fact they they charge you a percentage of your overall total sale price as a fee. I should also mention that I received a free sample of the Square product in exchange for my honest review.

This thing works awesome, and there are tons of other reviews, so read those for more info. Only problem we have had is the stand has a hard time connecting to chip reader occasionally. When you open the program for the first time, there is like a 10% chance it won’t connect to chip reader. You have to quit app and restart. Gets old.
If you’re considering a POS system to make it more convenient for your business to manage inventory and prices, you shouldn’t look any further. For the price, you can set up a fantastic FREE POS software with all the accessories such as the stand, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner, and EMV/chip reader for one upfront cost and not have to pay for your POS like some of these not so reputable POS sellers try to market to you. Even if you don’t use Square to process your cards (which is what Square truly wants you to do), the setup for a POS system with an iPad is second to none. The software gets constant updates, works flawlessly, and is FREE. I have no regrets about switching to the Square ecosystem for running my business and selling inventory. I occasionally use their card processing, but even if I didn’t, I’d still use the Square POS system and software. No regret here!
The Star Micronics TSP100 receipt printer is an efficient and space-saving solution for any medium to high volume retail environment. I just received my stand last night and I have to say out of the box, SUPER easy to use. It comes with 2 different types of mounts, the usb hub to plug in external things like receipt printers and cash drawers and even a barcode scanner. A lot of reviews said the Air 2 didn’t fit properly, but mine fit perfectly and they even include a special screw to hold it in the stand. I tested it and even picked it up an jiggled it. The ipad stayed in place. I will definitely be adding a receipt printer and cash drawer for my craft shows. Anyone on the fence should definitely give this a try!
Star Micronics CD3-1616 Tradition Cash Drawer, Printer Driven, 2 Media Slots, 5 Bill / 8 Coin Money Tray Insert (37965600), 16.1″ W x 16.4″ L x 4.4″ H, Black Color, CD1 Epson/Star Cable Included (37964350), CD3-1616BK58-S2 – 37965600
Not only Square tackled all of those problems listed above, it has the capabilities to do full and other comprehensive POS tasks such as time card m/c for employees, menu design items with picture eliminating countless hours of monkeying around trying to code or program old clunky POS systems such as Sharp POS…just to name a few!
Accept all major credit cards: Swipe cards securely and accurately with the integrated card reader. Process Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express at a small percentage per swipe. You can even use our NFC Reader to accept contactless payments.
Generally customers don’t mind the extra charge because of the convenience of not wasting time in going to an ATM. And if they use credit card, at least 1% returns to them, so it will be more of 1.75% charge. Pretty small for products under $25.
Gone are the days when your only option for purchasing something was to hand over something else of equal value, or even pieces of paper that represented that value. Exciting new technologies are creating exciting new ways for us to buy stuff. Making payments using only your mobile device is the current trendy form of transaction, and no service does it better than Square, our Editors’ Choice for mobile credit card readers and point-of-sale (POS) software solutions. But even within that category there are multiple emerging methods for businesses without cash registers to get paid. Fortunately, the new Square Contactless + Chip Card Reader has the future-proof features those businesses need.

To use the $49 Square Contactless + Chip Card Reader you must first download the free Square app for your phone or tablet and then pair your device to the reader via Bluetooth. I tested with a Moto X. Connecting the reader by Bluetooth results in the same functionality you with Square readers connected via the headphone jack of your phone. The whole transaction process occurs on the mobile app, and it’s thoroughly explained for beginners. Merchants can also take advantage of useful features such as item categorization and sales-history tracking. For more on the excellent Square app as a whole, including customer testimonials and a detailed overview of features, check out my full examination of the service, which is detailed in my review of the the $29 Square Chip Card Reader, another hardware option that is smaller but includes only magstripe and EMV functionality. More on EMV below.

The Kitchen Buzzer is designed to connect directly the the RJ11 port on the back of the printer. When a print job is sent to the TSP100, the buzzer will sound off. This is beneficial for high noise environmentslike kitchens to alert cooks that orders have been sent to them.
Thanks Tom, but I have reached out to the Square Customer Service team. The unit works appropriately with a strong WIFI connection only. Using a Cellular data plan for iphone and this CLCCR when there is no WIFI available is a total crap shoot. Throughout the day I checked the bluetooth connection between my Square CLCCR and my iphone and my iphone indicated that it was properly connected via bluetooth. After each transaction (I slid a customer’s credit card into the device) the phone said “Transaction Complete”. I never got a message that the reader was offline. I proceeded to take payments as if it was working properly. I had practiced at home in my own WIFI zone and all was well. I really don’t think this CLCCR works reliably with cellular data plans (which MOST artists use at shows). And there is most definately a glitch regarding a failure to indicate that the reader is not connected via bluetooth.
I recently opened business and I got an Android tablet to use with the Square POS system. Majority of Square POS systems, I’ve noticed are being used hand in hand with the Apple iPad. So I had to do quite a bit of research to find out which cash drawer and receipt printer was compatible with the Android. This cash drawer is great with an Android and can be used along with a USB receipt printer. The Star TSP 100 series in particular. It came with a pair of keys to use when one wants to open the drawer manually and also came with the appropriate cable necessary to connect with the USB receipt printer. For this cash drawer/receipt printer set up to be used with an Android, a USB on the go adapter is needed. I got the inateck card reader HUB.
Works well, disappointed that you have to press charge to get the reader ready unlike swiping the car. I mainly use it with the dock and some times I will take it off the dock and go mobile with Bluetooth its a very good connection never did it go asleep on me and it has a beefy battery to last the whole day.
I’ve installed dozens of these square POS systems. They work fine on their own, just be sure to get the proper size/version to match your ipad, the connectors differ. To expand the system you pair it with a printer, cash drawer, scanner, and chip reader.
I bought this for my office. I’m in private practice for speech language therapy. Some parents want to pay with Apple Pay and everyone else has a chip. The cord is plenty long. I keep the reader in the holder, but I didn’t keep the protective strip at the end. The reader is secure without the strip and with Apple making constant updates, you need to be able to pull the reader out to reset it occasionally. I still have the swiper that attached to my iPhone 7 Plus – I added an adapter to make it work, but this dock is my favorite. Great buy and great for my business.
Get your iOS or Android device, download Square Point of Sale, and connect via Bluetooth LE—you’re ready to take payments from anywhere. Or set up your counter and plug your reader into the optional Square Stand and Dock for Square Reader.
For increased longevity, the TSP100 features a print head rated with a 37 mile print-life, and the optional autocutter is rated at 1 million cuts, ensuring the Star TSP100 receipt printer will print excellently for many years.
Buying this combo and getting each Square POS piece individually was much cheaper than buying it from Square as part of their whole POS system. Plus, we were able to get our entire Square system in matching white. Cash box plugs into printer with a cable that looks like a phone cable, so it doesn’t require a USB port.
The Star Micronics CD3-1616 Tradition cash drawer is a cost effective retail cash drawer that integrates seamlessly into any retail or hospitality environment with a standard printer communication interface and bottom exit cable, hidden from the customer’s view.
Update: After several months this printer is still working strong and still haven’t had a problem with it. I noticed a couple of people complain about receiving the wrong printer- well the reason they received the wrong printer is because they ordered the wrong printer. The title plainly states the model is TSP143U, USB. TSP143U is the USB model, hence the U. If you need the ethernet model you’ll need one of the TSP143L series models.
I have two cafes and these readers are constantly losing functionality constantly. Sometimes they stop connecting to the ipad. Sometimes they stop reading inserted chips. 100% of them break. The ONLY reason we use Square is because they are both the merchant processor and the POS manufacturer. Their hardware is junk and support is non existent. The second I find out about a different processor/POS company I will try them out. I cannot wait for competition in this niche.

Doesn’t work with everything that has bluetooth! I had bought some cheap Android tablets that claimed to have Bluetooth 4.1, and I couldn’t get these to connect to them. For all of the “higher end” Android and Apple tablets I have, they connected just fine. Yes, it does go to sleep if it doesn’t communicate with the tablet after some time, but reconnecting on all of my different devices proved as simple as pushing the button (once I was back in square), and waiting about 10 seconds for it to reconnect – which it did without a hitch every single time. I bought 4 of these, and all 4 of them work on Android (higher end) and Apple without an issue.
