The Star Micronics CD3-1616 Tradition cash drawer is a cost effective retail cash drawer that integrates seamlessly into any retail or hospitality environment with a standard printer communication interface and bottom exit cable, hidden from the customer’s view.
This chip reader links to either of my square app devices (one is iOS, one is Android) via Bluetooth with no problem. When I have the reader in its dock & plugged in I never have trouble with it sleeping at inopportune times as other reviewers mentioned. It has increased my customer satisfaction with sales process since I now can read chip cards and offer Droid/Apple pay. It is also easier for me to use than the little magstripe reader.
The Star Micronics CD3-1616 Tradition cash drawer dual media slots provide extra storage for checks and large bills. For security, the Star CD3-1616 cash drawer key lock at front center allows for an easy manual release with a key or an electronic release.

Update: After several months this printer is still working strong and still haven’t had a problem with it. I noticed a couple of people complain about receiving the wrong printer- well the reason they received the wrong printer is because they ordered the wrong printer. The title plainly states the model is TSP143U, USB. TSP143U is the USB model, hence the U. If you need the ethernet model you’ll need one of the TSP143L series models.
Star Micronics CD3-1616 Tradition Cash Drawer, Printer Driven, 2 Media Slots, 5 Bill / 8 Coin Money Tray Insert (37965600), 16.1″ W x 16.4″ L x 4.4″ H, White Color, CD1 Epson/Star Cable Included (37964350), CD3-1616WT58-S2 – 37965590
I bought this as an upgrade to the square magstripe reader I had been using for a while. I was already familiar with the square app and functions, I just needed to integrate the new chip reader into my routine. I also purchased the charging dock based on reviews I read stating that the device turns off very often as a battery saving feature. The dock also seemed like it would improve overall ease of use.
I just received my stand last night and I have to say out of the box, SUPER easy to use. It comes with 2 different types of mounts, the usb hub to plug in external things like receipt printers and cash drawers and even a barcode scanner. A lot of reviews said the Air 2 didn’t fit properly, but mine fit perfectly and they even include a special screw to hold it in the stand. I tested it and even picked it up an jiggled it. The ipad stayed in place. I will definitely be adding a receipt printer and cash drawer for my craft shows. Anyone on the fence should definitely give this a try!
Everything worked exactly as it should, straight out of the box without any problems! It was easy to setup using the StarMicronics LAN & Bluetooth Setup Tool as well as the Configuration Utility TSP100. Once I configured my connection and established my IP address for the printer it was ready to use. Took about 10 – 15 minutes to setup everything. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting a receipt printer over IP.
The TSP143IIIU includes a special feature not available anywhere else in the POS industry, printer communication and tablet charging through lighting cable connection. Removing clutter from the workspace, the lightning connection takes the Apple charger offer your table, leaving one wire for two jobs.
Set up is pretty much straightforward. You download the app (Squre Register-POS), you’ll need your Business Account // Personal Account along with routing number. Zip Code, name, address, social security and what not. Pretty much what a bank would ask you. Once your account is linked, it will ask you if you want them to send you their product or if you already got it. I thought the product was going to be sent for free, but it was charging me another $50, so i wanted to cancel and it didn’t give me that option. I still have to check with customer service about that. In the meanwhile i just put “charge me later” or something along the lines.
I’ve only had it up and running for a couple of weeks now, but it prints and cuts the receipts well and have yet to have any problems with it. Drivers disc makes setting up and installing a snap, and it comes with any/all necessary cables. It even comes with a mount for wall mounting, but in looking at it I’m not sure how you would do that or even why someone might want to 🙂
Combined with its powerful futurePRNT Windows software, users can enhance their printed receipts to add graphics (logos and coupons), print multiple copies, or use the text processing function to replace printed information or trigger a coupon, and much, much more. The TSP100III can also be used with Star Micronics AllReceipts™ digital receipt app, allowing shoppers to manage their receipts digitally, and retailers to receive instant feedback on customer satisfaction.
I got the AGP model they sell here on Amazon for about $10 more a few years back for my first Square Stand setup. I saw this was the drawer that Square now recommends on their site, and the price on Amazon was even better than the first drawer I bought, so I figured what the heck, I’ll just get this one. The drawer seems to be built well, HOWEVER the inside of the drawer, which they don’t show you a picture of in the description is ridiculous. It has 8 slots for coins, so that means each slot is half the size of a normal coin slot. It makes absolutely no sense who in their right mind would design that. I’ve been in business for 20 years and have had many cash registers and this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything so crazy. Also the clamps that hold the bills in place are made of metal, which you’d think would be better since they’d be more sturdy than all the plastic clamps you’ve used in registers for the last 30 years, but the design of them is strange and makes it a pain to pull them up. I wouldn’t recommend this drawer if you’ve ever used another cash register before in your lifetime because it will just annoy you.

It is what I wanted. I used the chip reader for a while and thought the dock would add convenience for a charger and a one hand operation. One disappointing feature is that the button to press to connect to Bluetooth device is downward when inserted in the doc and I had to pull the piece that locks the reader into the dock then pull the reader to get to the button. It is something that could have been thought out when they design the read or the dock.
So when i ordered, it was advertised with the Square thingy + card swipe adapter. It did come with both, in box that looks more like the apple company made it. The products itself looks from apple. Quality seems good, sturdy, I just like the feel I don’t have to worry of grabbing it too hard and break it.
If I am at a venue where I have no power access, I still use the dock/charging station because it positions the reader for easy use. I do not put the locking piece on the top of the dock, because I do have to take the reader out & wake it up if it goes too long between uses. The on/off button on the reader is on the bottom; it is covered and unreachable when it is in the dock. That is a bit inconvenient, but if it prolong the battery life I am ok with it. Leaving the locking end off makes the reader easy to remove when necessary.

Thanks Tom, but I have reached out to the Square Customer Service team. The unit works appropriately with a strong WIFI connection only. Using a Cellular data plan for iphone and this CLCCR when there is no WIFI available is a total crap shoot. Throughout the day I checked the bluetooth connection between my Square CLCCR and my iphone and my iphone indicated that it was properly connected via bluetooth. After each transaction (I slid a customer’s credit card into the device) the phone said “Transaction Complete”. I never got a message that the reader was offline. I proceeded to take payments as if it was working properly. I had practiced at home in my own WIFI zone and all was well. I really don’t think this CLCCR works reliably with cellular data plans (which MOST artists use at shows). And there is most definately a glitch regarding a failure to indicate that the reader is not connected via bluetooth.
The Square Contactless and chip reader is a great product for those who run businesses and need something quick and easy to charge their clients with. The experience is super smooth and easy, works 100% of the time and takes up just about a few inches of space. I like the fact that it`s easy to use and visually appealing rather than those old credit card processing machines. I have enjoyed using this product and I will continue to do so until something better happens to be invented. The only gripe I have about this product is the fact they they charge you a percentage of your overall total sale price as a fee. I should also mention that I received a free sample of the Square product in exchange for my honest review.

The CD3-1616 Tradition Cash Drawer is a full-sized cash drawer for robust storage and high volume cash flow. You’ll be notified of declined transactions in your Activity screen once you’ve regained an internet connection, but this would likely be after your customer has left. Square is unable to know whether that is the case until you have internet access so that’s the risk in using offline mode. It should definitely be limited to when it’s absolutely necessary.
The iPad app has additional customization settings that I didn’t notice on the phone app. The larger screen makes setting up your account and using the service much more user friendly. And if you decide you want to pull the iPad out and use it as a portable device, you can do that too.

The Square Contactless + Chip Card Reader empowers businesses to accept two of the newest mobile credit card reader technologies: EMV and NFC. EMV is a new security standard designed to make transactions less risky for consumers. If you’ve recently received a new credit or debit card, it probably has an embedded, visible EMV chip. Instead of swiping EMV cards to make a payment, customers insert their card chip-first into the reader’s slot. The reader then quickly recognizes the card and processes the payment. NFC technology, by comparison, lets customers simply wave their phones over the reader to make a payment.
If you’re considering a POS system to make it more convenient for your business to manage inventory and prices, you shouldn’t look any further. For the price, you can set up a fantastic FREE POS software with all the accessories such as the stand, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner, and EMV/chip reader for one upfront cost and not have to pay for your POS like some of these not so reputable POS sellers try to market to you. Even if you don’t use Square to process your cards (which is what Square truly wants you to do), the setup for a POS system with an iPad is second to none. The software gets constant updates, works flawlessly, and is FREE. I have no regrets about switching to the Square ecosystem for running my business and selling inventory. I occasionally use their card processing, but even if I didn’t, I’d still use the Square POS system and software. No regret here!
To use the $49 Square Contactless + Chip Card Reader you must first download the free Square app for your phone or tablet and then pair your device to the reader via Bluetooth. I tested with a Moto X. Connecting the reader by Bluetooth results in the same functionality you with Square readers connected via the headphone jack of your phone. The whole transaction process occurs on the mobile app, and it’s thoroughly explained for beginners. Merchants can also take advantage of useful features such as item categorization and sales-history tracking. For more on the excellent Square app as a whole, including customer testimonials and a detailed overview of features, check out my full examination of the service, which is detailed in my review of the the $29 Square Chip Card Reader, another hardware option that is smaller but includes only magstripe and EMV functionality. More on EMV below.
I’ve installed dozens of these square POS systems. They work fine on their own, just be sure to get the proper size/version to match your ipad, the connectors differ. To expand the system you pair it with a printer, cash drawer, scanner, and chip reader.

Have used these at a lot of Arts & Crafts fairs. They work absolutely great! Even on shows with a few hundred other merchants nearby I have never had to wait more than a few seconds to get a good connection, which is a far cry from the several minute waits I often had to wait with terminals that relied on local wifi networks. In every case Square One transferred my money to my account by the next working day morning, gotta like that! Battery life is excellent, good for at least 40 cards between charges, but do be certain to keep a USB charger in your kit!
Unfortunately, I found this out after the 30 day return policy on my purchase has passed. Also unfortunately, this seller (despite being very polite) was firm in refusing to let me exchange my purchase for a cash drawer I could actually use.
After playing around with this some more. It is pretty quick when the phone and reader is kept closed together when the transaction is processing.. this set up cost around 4 dollars. Velcro and cheap phone case. Works perfect.
If you use ‘Square’ as your credit card acceptance service, the Square Stand takes you to the next level of professionalism. It is especially useful for your store location, or if you set up a kiosk for the day at a local event. The device itself is quite heavy in order to keep the unit stable while you use it and when the client signs it.
Accept all major credit cards: Swipe cards securely and accurately with the integrated card reader. Process Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express at a small percentage per swipe. You can even use our NFC Reader to accept contactless payments.
