I know there is a need to conserve battery.. but there should also be a mode where it is always connected and ready to use. It seems like to me at times, it needs to ‘think” for a while before any light flashes..

The WiFi Power Pack is designed to make any Star LAN interface printer “wireless”. The WiFi Power Pack includes a DK-USB power module and a TP Link wireless router
This chip reader links to either of my square app devices (one is iOS, one is Android) via Bluetooth with no problem. When I have the reader in its dock & plugged in I never have trouble with it sleeping at inopportune times as other reviewers mentioned. It has increased my customer satisfaction with sales process since I now can read chip cards and offer Droid/Apple pay. It is also easier for me to use than the little magstripe reader.
@girlfridaypaper @Fresh1 – As an add on, chip cards and contactless payments cannot be accepted in offline mode. They require an active internet connection (wifi or cellular data). Meaning you’ll need an active internet connection to use the Square Contactless and Chip Card Reader. Collecting payments in offline mode is limited to swiping cards using the magstripe reader (which comes with the Square Contactless and Chip Card Reader). You can find more details here. Hope this helps!
This printer is fast and has useable options. I use it with my iPad and Square credit card reader. You can also use it for POS or other systems or configurations. Using it with Square credit card processor I save paper because I only print the customer copy because all the other transaction data is accessed online. And when I tap print on my iPad it starts and completes the printing in just one second. I saw this printer being used at my local drug store with a different setup and it too works well. Give it a try and I think you’ll be glad you did.

Beware. Despite the Q&A talking about using this cash drawer via USB with a Square Stand, it can NOT be used this way. This cash drawer has only an ethernet (?) connection allowing it to be connected with a Square Stand indirectly through a compatible printer.
I just received my stand last night and I have to say out of the box, SUPER easy to use. It comes with 2 different types of mounts, the usb hub to plug in external things like receipt printers and cash drawers and even a barcode scanner. A lot of reviews said the Air 2 didn’t fit properly, but mine fit perfectly and they even include a special screw to hold it in the stand. I tested it and even picked it up an jiggled it. The ipad stayed in place. I will definitely be adding a receipt printer and cash drawer for my craft shows. Anyone on the fence should definitely give this a try!
I received this product in exchange for my unbiased opinion. The Square reader is super simple and easy to use. It is an especially good tool for small business owners who want to accept additional forms of payments(such as credit or debit cards) Additionally, the app on the google play store was easy to find and very straightforward. One downside, although somewhat expected are the fees associated with it. For example, 2.75 percent for credit card transactions. Other than that, I recommend this product for it’s simplicity and overall use. 4/5 stars.
Star Micronics’ CD3 Tradition Cash Drawer series are cost effective cash drawers the integrate seamlessly into any retail or hospitality environment with a standard printer communication interface and bottom exit cable, hidden from the customer’s view. CD3-1616 Tradition cash drawer can accommodate to Canadian, United States, and Latin American currency types of 4Bill-8Coin, and 5Bill-8Coin.
I recently opened business and I got an Android tablet to use with the Square POS system. Majority of Square POS systems, I’ve noticed are being used hand in hand with the Apple iPad. So I had to do quite a bit of research to find out which cash drawer and receipt printer was compatible with the Android. This cash drawer is great with an Android and can be used along with a USB receipt printer. The Star TSP 100 series in particular. It came with a pair of keys to use when one wants to open the drawer manually and also came with the appropriate cable necessary to connect with the USB receipt printer. For this cash drawer/receipt printer set up to be used with an Android, a USB on the go adapter is needed. I got the inateck card reader HUB.
That sounds strange—the Contactless and Chip Reader won’t be able to pair with your mobile device without a strong Wifi or data connection. In addition, you should have received an error message within the app if the payment wasn’t successful. 😕
This just makes your transactions so much more professional. We don’t normally do a large number of transactions. A tablet and the little square insert to run a card works fine. But it always seemed awkward, and sometimes you had to fumble with it. With the Square stand, that all goes away. It’s easy to operate. Customers have an easier time “signing”. It just feels so much more professional. From a volume standpoint, it probably wasn’t really necessary. From a professionalism standpoint, buying this was a brilliant decision.
The new Square Contactless and Chip Reader is included so you can accept every way your customers want to pay. Place the reader in the dock, connect the dock to the USB hub, and you’re ready for business. Accept magstripe cards, chip cards, and NFC payments like Apple Pay.

Thanks Tom, but I have reached out to the Square Customer Service team. The unit works appropriately with a strong WIFI connection only. Using a Cellular data plan for iphone and this CLCCR when there is no WIFI available is a total crap shoot. Throughout the day I checked the bluetooth connection between my Square CLCCR and my iphone and my iphone indicated that it was properly connected via bluetooth. After each transaction (I slid a customer’s credit card into the device) the phone said “Transaction Complete”. I never got a message that the reader was offline. I proceeded to take payments as if it was working properly. I had practiced at home in my own WIFI zone and all was well. I really don’t think this CLCCR works reliably with cellular data plans (which MOST artists use at shows). And there is most definately a glitch regarding a failure to indicate that the reader is not connected via bluetooth.
Update: After several months this printer is still working strong and still haven’t had a problem with it. I noticed a couple of people complain about receiving the wrong printer- well the reason they received the wrong printer is because they ordered the wrong printer. The title plainly states the model is TSP143U, USB. TSP143U is the USB model, hence the U. If you need the ethernet model you’ll need one of the TSP143L series models.

Doesn’t work with everything that has bluetooth! I had bought some cheap Android tablets that claimed to have Bluetooth 4.1, and I couldn’t get these to connect to them. For all of the “higher end” Android and Apple tablets I have, they connected just fine. Yes, it does go to sleep if it doesn’t communicate with the tablet after some time, but reconnecting on all of my different devices proved as simple as pushing the button (once I was back in square), and waiting about 10 seconds for it to reconnect – which it did without a hitch every single time. I bought 4 of these, and all 4 of them work on Android (higher end) and Apple without an issue.
For increased longevity, the TSP100 features a print head rated with a 37 mile print-life, and the optional autocutter is rated at 1 million cuts, ensuring the Star TSP100 receipt printer will print excellently for many years.
Features include a black or white stainless steel front drawer cover, dual media slots, and a three function lock system. The smooth black or white coated finish provides a unified appearance and complements the connected POS peripherals for merchants. The dual media slots provide extra storage for checks and large bills. For security, the key lock at the front center allows for an easy manual release with a key or electronic release.
Have used these at a lot of Arts & Crafts fairs. They work absolutely great! Even on shows with a few hundred other merchants nearby I have never had to wait more than a few seconds to get a good connection, which is a far cry from the several minute waits I often had to wait with terminals that relied on local wifi networks. In every case Square One transferred my money to my account by the next working day morning, gotta like that! Battery life is excellent, good for at least 40 cards between charges, but do be certain to keep a USB charger in your kit!

I own a restaurant and a beauty salon, Square (one flat fee of 2.75%) had solved a lot of problems for me. No more paper rolls or running out of paper during a transaction, no more chasing down a pen for customers to sign the receipt, no more worrying about missing a tip or doing batching/settlement at the end of day, and no more keeping rolls of receipts for potential customer dispute/charge back (by the way the ink on receipt fades after a week anyway, you won’t be able to read anything after that so keeping receipts is completely useless). Prior to Square I used Central Payment, they charged an all in fee around 2.78% (including statement fee, PCI compliant fee, anti fraud fee, and a host of other funny fees…). Then I switched to Elavon, which is promoted by Costco, the rate was pretty much the same around 2.75% for everything. So frustrated, I decided to do my own research instead of trying something new every time a credit card rep stops by my place to pitch “a lower/better rate”.
@Kitekitty – You can definitely get by with out a Square Stand. The brains of the operation is the Square Register app, which will work like a charm on your iPad! You can just plug our reader into the headphone jack, or pair the Square Contactless and Chip Card Reader wirelessly. Hope this helps!
Unfortunately, I found this out after the 30 day return policy on my purchase has passed. Also unfortunately, this seller (despite being very polite) was firm in refusing to let me exchange my purchase for a cash drawer I could actually use.
The Kitchen Buzzer is designed to connect directly the the RJ11 port on the back of the printer. When a print job is sent to the TSP100, the buzzer will sound off. This is beneficial for high noise environmentslike kitchens to alert cooks that orders have been sent to them.
The Square stand is very durable and to my surprise heavier than it looks. The swivel mount is built into the bottom of the device and conceals the power cord. This cord is connected to a 3 port USB module that will allow users to connect up to three separate POS devices in addition to connections with wireless LAN POS devices like receipt and label printers. Although not official, the Square stand can hold an iPad Air 2 pretty perfectly. I would suggest placing a small foam dot or so, just so that it is seamless to the stands edges. All in all, this is a great start-up POS system and highly customizable to any operation. I would recommend this product to any small business.
