These kitchen printers are impact printers that use ribbon (SPE-7060). The only versions that works with Clover are the ethernet model and wifi model. For most setups ethernet is recommended over wifi as it is more reliable, easier to setup, and more cost effective. Using an ethernet interface allows the printer to be placed anywhere in your restaurant/cafeteria/deli/business as long as the ethernet connection is on the same network as the clover station. The way that it is configured on the station is that in the app settings the app will look for a Star Micronics SP700 printer when it finds one on the network you can select it and it will print all kitchen orders to that printer. The clover station has no way of knowing that a USB/Parallel/Serial printer is available, it has to be ethernet.

I’ve had no difficulty with it using the following startup method (assuming you’ve configure the AP to connect to your wifi network): plug the device into a standalone source of power (I just used a USB phone charger, since it’s powered via micro USB); wait a minute or so, then power on the printer.

Everything worked exactly as it should, straight out of the box without any problems! It was easy to setup using the StarMicronics LAN & Bluetooth Setup Tool as well as the Configuration Utility TSP100. Once I configured my connection and established my IP address for the printer it was ready to use. Took about 10 – 15 minutes to setup everything. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting a receipt printer over IP.

Update: After several months this printer is still working strong and still haven’t had a problem with it. I noticed a couple of people complain about receiving the wrong printer- well the reason they received the wrong printer is because they ordered the wrong printer. The title plainly states the model is TSP143U, USB. TSP143U is the USB model, hence the U. If you need the ethernet model you’ll need one of the TSP143L series models.
