About The Author: Camille Meehan, POSLady since 2011, is the dame to talk to when you’ve got a printing question. The host of many POSGuys videos she now pulls the strings in the shadows of Ask POSGuys, plotting total global printer domination. She rules over the kitchen printers with an iron ribbon smashing fist, a BA in design, and over eight years print/design experience. Note: Camille does get this TM-U220 question a LOT and for her sanity, this post now exists.
Overall, seems to be a decent printer to use with an iPad-based point of sale system. However, after about 3 weeks, the printer stopped cutting the receipts & went into an error mode that the owner’s manual said was “non-recoverable”. I contacted Star Micronics customer service & shipped to their repair facility. They got it back to me within 3-4 days & everything was covered under the warranty, minus the cost to ship the printer to them. So far, it seems to be working as expected since I got it back from being repaired. Perhaps I just got a bad one that came off the assembly line & somehow managed to slip through quality control.
This is a good printer but a bit slow, comes with no instructions and IS NOT BLUE TOOTH as stated, for my needs this was not needed. (If you need the IP address ) Turn off printer hold feed button till you hear one beep the release. All the information on the printer will then print.
While your printer is in pairing mode, tap the Star Micronics printer in the DEVICES list on your iPad. After a short pairing process, the printer will show as Connected, and the LED on the back of the printer will become a solid blue color:
On the most recent model of the Star Micronics TSP650II Bluetooth wireless receipt printer (model number 39449871), auto-connect is enabled. This means that after you’ve paired your printer with your iPad, the Bluetooth connection is established automatically every time the printer’s switched on and in range of your iPad.
The printer is fine but bluetooth connectivity has been an incredible challenge. We have probably wasted 20 hours wrestling with it in the few weeks we have had it. The Starprint utility can say it is not connected when it is … and vice versa. The Bluetooth says it is not connected yet we can print a receipt from the register. The delay communicating via bluetooth means we have to leave a key in teh till drawer rather than wait for it to eventually open even though we have adjusted the utility and timing. So, while the printer is fine, don’t go bluetooth because you can’t use a cable even if you want to as there’s no socket …. just bluetooth ! So, buy a cable printer version and be happier !

TLDR SUMMARY: Model TM-U220A is larger, has a take-up device and can’t be wall mounted. Model TM-U220B and TM-U220D are essentially copies of each other except that the D model has no autocutter. (Scroll past the table for additional images of take up device and wall mounting.)
Older models of the Bluetooth printer are shipped with auto-connect off. This means that a paired printer won’t connect automatically, even if it’s turned on and within range of the iPad it’s been paired with.
Intuitive Software Developer Kits for iOS, Android, Windows and Linux are available to download to enable the simple set-up of Star receipt printers with Apple iOS, Android and Windows tablets for mobile pos printing in retail and hospitality environments, mobile ticketing and logistics control.
Alongside this the TSP654IIBI (Bluetooth) is the first desktop Bluetooth printer for Apple iOS and Android with cash drawer support and is compatible with major operating systems including Mac OSX, Android, Windows and Linux.
The SM-T300i also offers 3” (80mm) “Drop-In & Print” paper loading, high reliability (37 million lines MCBF) and high print speeds of up to 75mm per second; standard and 2D barcode support, intuitive LCD display easy setup facility, configurable auto power down mode and a long-lasting battery life.
UPDATE: August 14, 2016 – Still no issues with printing. There is a slight delay, about five seconds, between completing the transaction and printing the receipt. This could very well be an issue using Square Payment Systems, and not really the printer and the IPad that I’ve linked it to for Square sales. The printer does lose its Bluetooth connection when I move the IPad to the next room, which is expected, but it often does not “find” and then “pair” again without me going through the printer’s pairing process again. For that reason, I’m lowering my star rating from five to four. In the scheme of things, this is just a minor inconvenience and the printer quality more than makes up for any issues with pairing from time to time.
With a durable splash and dust proof design and the ability to be drop tested up to 1.5 metres; the SM-T400i fits seamlessly into the majority of environments including retail, hospitality, field work and anywhere where a handheld device is required to seamlessly print to a portable printer.
We first bought the Wifi model and couldn’t get the manufacturer or Square to figure out how to make the two communicate, even though it’s supposed to be supported. We were told to return that and switch to this blue tooth model. Now this one won’t communicate with Square either. It’s the only receipt printer that Square publishes it supports. We don’t have any odd setup, all brand new peripheral equipment, new iPad, Square stand/Register. Hours on support with both and no resolution to date.
Dust protected and splash-proof resistant design (IP54 certified), 1.5m drop test reliable, the SM-T300i is the perfect solution for demanding Retail, Hospitality and Logistic environments; compatible with Apple, Android and Windows devices, allowing the user to seamlessly migrate to another OS if required
