The extra seconds spent trying to decipher someone’s chicken scratch—or worse, having to ask them—can add up to extra minutes that people wait for food or drinks, which means additional time at the table and ultimately, longer wait times for people to be seated. More waiting means less table turns, which will cost you money. However, a restaurant kitchen printer can help recoup wasted minutes by cutting down food prep time and resources spent correcting mistakes.

Choose an impact printer with a ruggedized design that can withstand the hazards of a restaurant kitchen. Impact printers are designed so a printhead makes impact with an ink ribbon, transferring the message onto the receipt paper. The type of paper is key in this situation. I am still trying my best to use it. My POS system doesn’t support Star. and now I am having the common problem that I am dealing with Star tech support, they are still working on it to solve the problem, which is it doesn’t print out All Receipts bar-codes on my machine even from their own configuration utility, can’t use Receipt Flip, it doesn’t cut off the receipt automatically, doesn’t print out my full store name in every other receipt, and sometimes the receipt goes out 2 feet long.
Perform a test print. Most Epson printers have a self-test function. Refer to your manual for instructions on how to do this. Usually, it is just a matter of depressing one button while pushing power.
The best part about this package is that each one comes with both a regular card swiper and a chip reader square. This is great since so many cards are now going to chip but you still need a swiper for regular cards.
Beware. Despite the Q&A talking about using this cash drawer via USB with a Square Stand, it can NOT be used this way. This cash drawer has only an ethernet (?) connection allowing it to be connected with a Square Stand indirectly through a compatible printer.

Using only Epson-tested media is critical to prolonging the life of the printhead in your Epson thermal printer. Other media has been known to damage the printhead over time and damage from use of untested media is not covered under warranty.
Restaurant kitchen printers are an important tool for streamlining kitchen operations. If you’re considering a POS system to make it more convenient for your business to manage inventory and prices, you shouldn’t look any further. For the price, you can set up a fantastic FREE POS software with all the accessories such as the stand, receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner, and EMV/chip reader for one upfront cost and not have to pay for your POS like some of these not so reputable POS sellers try to market to you. Even if you don’t use Square to process your cards (which is what Square truly wants you to do), the setup for a POS system with an iPad is second to none. The software gets constant updates, works flawlessly, and is FREE. I have no regrets about switching to the Square ecosystem for running my business and selling inventory. I occasionally use their card processing, but even if I didn’t, I’d still use the Square POS system and software. No regret here!

Another common issue is that your printer may be installed on the incorrect port. You can check this by opening up Devices and Printers (or Printers and faxes if you are using WindowsXP), right clicking on your printer, selecting Printer properties (or Properties if you are using WindowsXP), and clicking on the Ports tab. Try selecting several different ports (hint: if it is a USB printer, try USB001, USB002, USB003, and so on. if it is serial try COM1, COM2, COM3, and so on. If it is parallel try LPT1, LPT2, LPT3 and so on.)
Choose an impact printer – Even the cleanest, most well-run kitchen is full of landmines that can damage electronics, especially printers. Heat, spills, particles and steam can harm a restaurant kitchen printer and cause expensive downtime while the printer is repaired or replaced.

If text is printed, test passes. If the printer passed this test but failed the Windows driver test previously then go back and check the  the port settings in Windows driver  to see that  they are the same as used in the direct connection test. Verify the connection type (i.e. serial) and the port settings (i.e. 19200 baud, COM 1, etc) are the same.
