Square introduces more ways to engage with customers. Square now integrates with cash drawers and receipt printers. With a single tap on an iPad, you can open your register’s drawer to complete a cash sale or make change. Please read the options below carefully before purchasing a cash drawer.
Have not purchased this printer, but wanted to let people know that this is not the only printer that will work with Square. I have two Star Micronics printers, one Ethernet and one Bluetooth and both work fine with the Square app for iPad. I also have Ethernet based cash drawers that connect through the printers and those works just as well. This probably has the easiest set up, but it is not the only way.

If you are buying this for the Amazon Local Register payment platform, be sure to get the Ethernet version (not the USB version). This one only connects to your network and not directly to a computer.

I don’t have any personal use of this but this item says it takes usb input and converts it to the connection that would come out of the printer from what I understand.  It may work, it may not.  There are no reviews that are helpful of the product.
I spent years in jobs that included lots of cash handling. This cash drawer is the nicest I’ve seen. It’s solid build will last for years and its finish is just lovely. It triggers cleanly and the drawer all but shoots out when triggered. I’m very pleased.
@SSmobile @Kevin7 – I went ahead and moved both of your comments over to the thread where we are tracking this feature request. I totally understand your frustration and desire for Epson support. They make a mean printer that is also a fraction of the cost of most Star printers. I have personally passed this feedback along to our product team, and expanding compatibility is something that is top of mind for them. I’ll update this thread if/when this functionality is added in the future!
I have my own iPad 2 and square stand. I was Looking for compatible hardware and this was excellent. The register and printer work great, I even ordered more papers for the printer so we will use it long term.
** If you are using the Square Register app, this is the USB version of the Star TSP143 Printer and must be used with the Square Stand Hardware. You will need a Star ethernet or bluetooth printer if you are using Square or a similar Point of Sale app with the tablet or device by itself.
This printer is fast. Thermal printers print very fast, and the internals are actually much simpler than the ones at my work. You simply open it up, drop the paper inside (yes, it’s a drop in, which makes it much easier to replace the roll once it has run out) and then feed the paper over the top.
If you have a Square Stand, in addition to the printers above, you can use certain USB interface receipt printers. The following receipt printers are only compatible with the Square Stand, not the Square card reader:
I haven’t yet seen a receipt printer that is airprint compatible though, allowing more apps to use it. While credit card acceptance and sales apps would obviously benefit, I can imagine a number of other uses for a small printer that prints bits of disposable information. The daily forecast, sudoku puzzles, today’s schedule, todo lists, etc, for those who have to share their iPad with a spouse or children, for instance.

@usascottwright – While we don’t currently support Epson printers, it’s definitely a popular feature request. I’ll update this thread if that changes in the future! Also, apologies for the delay in following up with you.
Impact printers only print order tickets for a kitchen. They’re not affected by heat and can withstand warm environments. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal, receipt printer paper.
If you need a remote Kitchen Impact Order Printer, the Star SP742ML or SP742ME will work for all applications. It is a Dot Matrix Receipt Printer and uses a ribbon, so you can print on carbon copy paper rolls, or standard single ply :
These receipt printers are certified to be comaptible with Square Reader and Square Reader software for iPad, iPhone and Andoid.  Contact us if you have any questions about which printers, cash drawers or other components will work with your Square Reader application.  Get your business or store online today!
The Square Stand is one of the easiest ways to add a full featured POS for your business in minutes. Setting up your POS terminal has never been so easy. Simply select the USB components that you want for your register. Plug a receipt printer, cash drawer, and barcode scanner into the included USB hardware hub for instant setup. It’s plug & play easy. It’s just another way that Square Register is making commerce easy.
I do appreciate your post though and I wanted to let you know that we are working to provide support for more printers and your feedback is welcome! For example, we recently launched support for several Epson printers which can be used with Square on iOS devices (the full list of printers is here).
You may plug a receipt printer into one of the three USB ports found on the Square Stand accessories hub, but kitchen printers are typically located some distance away from your checkout register – farther away than a USB cable will reach.
Edit to say that the network issues I mentioned were tied to the wireless router we were using. Replaced that piece and the printer started working great. I still recommend purchasing as a package for better price and customer service, but not a bad piece of equipment.
The STAR MICRONICS TSP654IIBI is fast and easy to configure. It is Apple MFi certified. It has auto connect and so it will connect to your iPad automatically. If you want to setup your receipt printer fast, this may be one of the best options. There is no serial cable, ethernet cable or USB connection. That seems like a positive benefit. If you move around a lot or you don’t want to mess with cables the STAR MICRONICS TSP654IIBI may be want you want.

If your customer entered an email address to receive a receipt from a Square merchant in the past, they may already be opted in to automatic receipts. These customers won’t be asked to enter their contact information after a sale, and a receipt will automatically be sent to their preferred email address.
This video, from http://www.beaglehardware.com, describes how to connect the approved printer and cash drawer to Square Register. With Square Register, you can print receipts for your customers at the counter. Connect to a cash drawer to make change for customers and store cash. The cash drawer will automatically open when connected to a supported receipt printer for every cash transaction and refund on your iPad or Android device.

To create your own bar codes and labels, you’ll need to use a third-party application. At the moment, we don’t support bar code and label printers and can’t guarantee compatibility, but many customers have success using the DYMO Label Writer 450 and labels with Square.
Square is not interested in using anyone but Star. And their attitude is that they frankly don’t care. I know, I have emails from them about it. If I was to guess, I would bet they have a deal with Star that funds their (insert pizza parties, to silk pockets). But lets be realistic. I mean it has to be something viable, right? The fact that Star uses the same print protocals that Epson uses has no bearing on an Epson receipt printer not working. It goes in the same line as Android devices can’t use bluetooth devices… although that new chip reader is bluetooth. It is a lack of customer service and they need to step up to the plate, or someone is going to come along and take their business away from them.
